WINTER

Winter has hit N J ! The fields are covered in snow and the ponies are covered in rugs! Good news is tate started back in work yesterday and is feeling good . We are planning on heading to the fork for January which will allow the horses to get fit without concern of weather interfering. We will then head to Aiken for Feb and March. Keep warm! Xx

Turkey, Stuffing .. Stuffed

Well the past week has been actually a lot of fun. With Doug out of the country myself, chrissy. megan(dougs w/s) Holly ( no Matt bc he was stuck transporting a horse in Holland!),Sam ( Holly and Matts w/s) Dick and Marilyn Payne brought the Holiday Season in with at Trash Can Turkey!. You might say "what!|??" but Dougs dad read about how to make a trash can turkey in the drive way in an hour and a half.. so of course we all showed up to see this .. litterally a metal trash can turned upside down with coals on top and all around basically steamed the turkey to perfection. Marilyn made sure she cooked another turkey just in case that one didnt work out( not that she had any doubts :)!!). .. But it kicked off a very fun weekend.
As you can see in the pics above Melonie, her daughter sophie and I had a great time with echo. Echo is a windfall baby that I only started a few weeks ago and he has been such a treat! Sophie was home for the long weekend and got up and rode as did melonie! 10 rides in and he is already the perfect little dude so we had a lot of laughs and enjoyed the chilly mornings playing with this little 3 year old.
Sat. Night there was a party at my barn for Dana and Sean's ( the owners of Hart Farm) Nanny Teda at a house down the street which was really fun! Dana is mostly involved with hunter/jumpers and its a shame our worlds dont cross more bc i really enjoyed chatting with the gang at this shindig!.. Then from there was onto Dick and Marilyns again for a party Holly was throwing to show videos and pictures from her trip to England. She had a lot of local support to raise money to fly herself and her horse abroad and this was a thankyou dinner. It was very interesting, everyone was so excited and iterested in all the little details that, we as trainers/riders do everyday and find so ordinary. It really opened my eyes that pictures really do say 1000 words and the pictures and videos she has were priceless for those who helped her on her journey but didnt get to actually take the trip.. point noted!
So the weekend closed with a leftover turkey dinner for matt and doug to enjoy since both of them missed thanksgiving.. but the two of them a bit jet lagged the rest of us stuffed and tired were all thankful we were in pleasent quiet company that didnt mind the fact that all of us just sat, had some food shared a few stories and off to bed by 8:30.. ..
on that note.. hope everyone had a happy turkey day and ...goodnight x

Happy Thanksgiving!

This blog might not so light i apoligize ahead of time! My first ride today was a dressage school on Nigel... Nigel i love and my he holds my heart in most conversations but if i were to be honest id say he is such a trier but i cant get through to him on the flat. I can get him to be obidient but not competitive against the horses that are holding our sport to a high level today. I always get excited and chrissy or friends will ask how was nigel and i say "he was great, for nigel" but today something got through to him and he was just great. Compared to any horse Nigel was a star, it took all i had not be in tears at 8 in the morning bc weather he gives me that at an event or not i felt like today he understood me and for that i was thankful...next in my day i traveled to my friend, melonie downt the road. Melonie had a 3 year old windfall baby. I started Echo a little over a week ago. Melonie and her family lost her husband and her childrens father a little less than a year ago to a heart attack. Melonie gave me her sons ( who is at law school) car, a little 325 bmw in return for starting her horse, because money isnt something to be frivously spent. Today her daughter, Cloey came to see echos progress. Cloey was excited and couldnt stop smiling,as I held Echo while she got on she said " I have been waiting for this for 3 and 1/2 years. She was so happy. I stood lunging her on the baby, her and her mom brought into the world 3 and 1/2 years ago and I felt I was part of something that was bringing a smile and love to a family that had seen alot of pain in the past year. I drove away thinking " I love my job"
The last thing that made me thankful in my day was around 12:30pm when i was in the indoor helping chrissy on amatoro and riding Geoffrey. Doug sent me a message from Ireland ( where he has been for the last week foxhunting) saying he had a rotational fall on a 4 y/o jumping a 3 board fence with barb wire. Rotational falls rarley end well, I have had 2. The first both the horse and I ended up fine, alittle concussion and that was about it. The second my luck ran out, I lost my horse. This was one of the most terrifying and saddest moments of my life. I lost myself for a while after this. Now I try and identify moments that luck was on my side and thank god or whoever you would like to for those moments. Today I am very thankful that after a rotational fall Doug and his horse are fine. Doug has hurt his shoulder but nothing alittle surpass and advil wont help. I am taking this night to be thankful for my wonderful horses,my family,my friends and health .. please do the same

On the way home

Well all very exciting! Nigel finished 3 over all! Penny 1 waylon 2 nigel 3 . I'm so glad we made the trip up north. The event was fantastic the people were so nice I had a great time really spending some time with Canada s up and coming riders Diana Burnett Jess pheonix karl s and several others. Don Good nigels owner and sponsor of the indoor eventing could not have been a more gracious host and I think he was very happy with the nig! So this will be an annual event we will be attending and I would strongly reccomend to take a visit there next Nov to see it yourself!

Very Exciting News!!

I got an email yesterday saying tate and I are on the High Performance List!! Which basically means the short list for USET. They create an A and B list every spring and fall that consist of horses that are not only qualified for a Team Competition ( Olympics,Worlds,Pan Ams) but are very selective of the quality of horse .. only choosing horse and rider combinations they feel would be competitive and have the potential to medal for the country. So it is a real compliment and im so lucky to be teamed up with the Tater he really is such a star! The next team competition are the World Games 2010. These lists will be re-evaluated after spring three days (Rolex, badminton,Jersey Fresh) and that list will be what the WEG team is chosen from. The High Performance horse and rider combinations will have top focus in training and grants to help get to the final list that will be chosen in the late spring.
Other exciting news is that Nigel and I were invited to compete in the Royal Fair in Toronto,Canada next week. There are basically 12 riders that compete in a $10,000 indoor eventing competition. We compete on Monday night and Tues night. The course is a combo show jumps and cross country jumps. If you have a rail its converted to time 4 sec added to your total time to complete the course. At the end of both rounds the pair with the fastest time combined will win! It is in a coliseum that can hold 6000 people hopefully Nigel keep his eyeballs on the job!! Don Good owns Nigel and is a major sponsor of the Event so it would be fun if he did well. Ill take pictures on my phone and keep the blog updated! supposed to be a lot of fun!!

VA HT

I was so pleased with the horses at VA but unfortunately the scores don't really show it. Racer did a perfect Little 28 in the dressage only to be technically eliminated for my whip being to long! This whip I have used all season and has been measured numerous times and always been approved.. it even has a green strip on it reading 110 cm but there was a little tassel type thing on the end that put it slightly over and no one caught it before.. nothing I could do about it other than be really mad! but there wasn't really anyone to be mad at .. I still show jumped and he put in a hunter clear but due to the rain(theme of the season) They wouldn't let me go xc o well.. He is now out in the field at home with Barb in va and will pick work back up in January. Nigel was great! he was typical Nigel on the flat tried hard but just gets nervous in that little box.. the xc was the prelim Olympics and although Nigel has gone advanced he has not jumped a log since April.. i stopped in middleburg on the was to VA HT to xc school and he was good but i was not expecting such a massive prelim so i didn't school that much. He was very good though I tried a new bit and it seems to get through to him.. he is still strong but i can get him back if i really need to which is nice.. Sj he was very good to not to be a complainer but the course i thought was really unfair.. twisty and turny with multiple roll backs that you couldn't help but yank on there faces but he was very tolerant and jumped very well.
So Im taking Geoffrey in tomorrow to get re-scoped to make sure his ulcers are all gone and then hopefully he will start back into work. Tater still gets another month off and has had his hind shoes pulled. We also have a new comer to the barn for the month. Amatoro, is a 4 year old Lucitano I started for Cindy Sty's. He is coming to boot camp for the month so Cindy feels confident with him over the winter. He is a sharp little dude but he really wants to be good so I think it will be fun getting him used to life at the farm!

Fair Hill Wrap Up!!

Well what a weekend! Im sorry so late finishing up results but I think I have just dug my way out of the mud from fairhill!.. Tate was amazing Sunday jumped a clear round and finished up 5th
Boyd
Karen
Kelly Sult
Phillip
Sinead
Boyd
Top 6
Tate has been happy out in the field since sunday night and will have at least till Dec. 1 off!! 24/7 in the field like a real horse .. every now and then he looks up from grazing like he reconizes me but I think it took him about 5 sec to transfer back to mustang mode!!
It was exciting after show jumping I got asked to join 5 other horses in Vet Evaluations for the selectors. Due to the fact that the WEG is still a year away they were abbreviated invovling just a trot up, brief medical history and lunging. The vets were impressed as was I that I had checked no to all of the questions on medical history.. Injections.. no Acupuncture.. no...gastro gaurd.. no magnetic blanket.. no surgery .. no ... The last year has been a bit crazy and I actually forgot to appretiate how lucky I am to (knock on wood) have a horse that is so easy on himself. Im sure in the next year with added work there will be some things I can do to help tate feel comfortable in his work but to have done 3 CIC *** and 1 CCI*** with just a good fitness and feediing program is makes me very appretiative to have such a good partner!..
Onward and upward.. this weekend is Waradoca BN with Racer and im very excited. I love this little dude and Im glad to give him some attention this week! Then onto VA HT where racer will go Novice and Nigel will actually make a return to action and compete in OP. Im also excited about a new member joining the team! Chrissy McBride will be coming on as a working student. She will fit in perfect with the NJ clan and im sure will only make the Aiken trip more enjoyable! Thats it for now! Ciao Ciao

Tate is a star!

Today was unbelievable weather!! Its been raining for 3 days and the course looked like it. 82 started dressage in the 2 star 28 will continue toMMorrow and around 80 in the 3 star and I believe 40 something will trot up toMMorrow. Tate moved from 21 to 6 with his run today. He was great even in the mud and full of running till the very end which was a comfort bc there were a lot of horses being nursed home. Tate is getting some fluids now to make sure he feels good toMMorrow trot up is at 9 but jumping is not till later in the afternoon.

Dressage

So today was a little disappointing. Tate was feeling very well in warm up but after a hard school yesterday and a bit to long of a warm up add about an inch of down pour rain left us feeling a little flat. We had a few bobbles that left is with a 52 which after today I think still has is in the top 10 but after toMMorrows dressage will hopefully keep us in the top 20 headed out to xc day. Winning score now is a 45. With all the rain and a big three star track believe me this will not be a dressage competition so hopefully there will be plenty of opportunity to move up. Will keep ya updated

Jumping

Today since there is no eventing Doug and I are off show jumping. I did not realize how rich this area is in professionals . . Nona Garson has a beatiful farm about 20 min away. Sir Bally just jumped and finished with a clear in the first and clear in the jump off finishing 4 th. I have to jump HC in the next few BC they are children/adult jumpers but its good for bally to get in the ring and there are plenty of people here to show him to .

2 place finish at CIC***!!

Well the weekend finished off excellent! Tate really stepped up to the plate and finished on his dressage score. Plantation did an amazing job with sponsors and owners, the Sponsors tent seemed to be filled all weekend! The cross-country was a good track but with plantations terrain( side of a hill) it is always a tough run. Tate kept pushing the whole way around and bar one scary moment when he decided to leave a stride out at a table( I guess he was feeling keen!) it was a solid performance. Six horses came in under the time he was one, coming in about 8 sec fast. He recovered well but did get a good gash behind from an inside stud. Sunday we didn't jump till around 1 so I took tate for a good long hack in the morning and he was feeling great! Jumping and literally squealing at the sound of the loud speaker ! Going into show jumping there was not a rail in hand from 1st place to 20th so the pressure was on.. Philip was winning Boyd right behind then myself then Phillip was abut . 4 behind me on his next horse! Tate was fantastic .. I took a big risk going into the triple and took a bit of a flyer but he handled it well and left the rails up and he finished with a clear round!.. Boyd had 2 down and Philip jumped a clear so we moved up to 2 place. Tate also won an extra award for best conditioned which was very exciting due to that being a priority this year bc he struggled a bit last year with his wind. Im very proud of him and we will keep up the extra lessons bc they seem to be paying off! Next for Tate is the 3 star at Fair Hill!! This weekend im hoping to take Racer to a little BN and then possibly Some boys down to Morvan the next week.. thats it for now..
ps tate looks happy/sound and dirty after rolling in his field all night!

bucks county

Well little racer took the big win at bucks county in his second ever event in the begginer novice! Last week at seneca I dont think racer or I really knew what was going to happen at his first outing. He won the dressage on a 30 he was very consistant in the ring. We did have to have two looks at some of the jumps on xc but he was adorable and just trying to figure out what the actual job he was supposed to be doing was.. as soon as he figured that out he was flying!( as flying as you can be at begginer novice).. He is a very smart little dude and came out this weekend like an old pro! He led the dressage by around 10 points on a 29 ! He rocked around the xc like he had been doing it for at least a whole season and had the last rail in show jumping but really put in a little hunter round so im very pleased!.. We had a crew from the local barns with us and other than one or two little blips everyone had a good day, doug took every ribbon from 1st to 6th, Nina finished 3, larry had double clear jumping phases, jen took blue, kelsey won the dressage so all and all a good showing! .. now we are getting ready for plantaion Tate and Geoffery are getting health certs today. Wend Tate and I have a lesson with Betsy Steiner then straight to Plantation, trot up on thurs!

sorry been a while

Sorry it has been a while since my last update but things have been CRAZY! In a good way.. The horses are all going well and business is picking up. First thing first Tater is doing Fab and we are getting prepared for the CIC 3* at Plantation next week. With help from our training grant I have been getting Dressage help consistantly from Betsy Steiner and jumping with Katie Purdant and Anne Kursinski. I can not express how much this help as pushed me and taken not only tate to the next level but is helping all my horses. I really feel that the details that need to be addressed to win at the top levels are being addressed and that has me eagar as hell to keep the nose to the grindstone! Geoffrey has been reaping the benifits of my added knowledge and seems to be complying to work now that in his opinion im worthy of being listened to! Geoffrey like all pretty boys does not like being told what to do espesially by a girl! But i think he is starting to like me. He is headed to the CCI 1 * at plantation. Racer is headed to a begginer novice tommorrow and is on good form, still learning and getting a little caught off gaurd every now and then but still happy every day to go to work with a smile on his face ( if horses could smile) which is an awesome attitude to work with. Im doing a lot of teaching which i am enjoying as well as breaking a Lucitano for Cindy Stys which is an entertaining experience! I have not worked with his breed before but he has a sensitive TB like side as well as a quiet nature like a warmblood. He is def. keeping me on my toes as well as last week on the floor! But working with every horse from the baby just starting to the Advanced is helping to keep things in prespective and im loving it ( but I do think a day at the spa would do my bones good!)..xx

Seneca

Well things are getting busy! We have a fun mix of upper level horses and babies getting going at Hart Farm. Juli and I had a fun morning of xc with the youngin's introducing ditches, waters and banks. It never seizes to amaze me how rewarding the young horses can be. I laughed more this morning cross country schooling than I have in a long time. The leaps and curious bounds the horses made left me on the end of my reins quite a few times but thankfully the horses in the barn right now have the same sense of humor I do. This weekend I am taking racer "White Gloves Adamus" to his first begginer novice and Bally is competing at novice at Seneca. Im really looking forward to it. When you compete at the Advanced level the stress/excitment and adrenaline is I have to be fast in the time, clean show jumping and a perfect dressage, with the babies its a stress and honest curiosity of the unknown... how are they gonna deal with the outside world. I laugh it must be a bit of what if feels like sending your kid to the first day of school.. how are they gonna deal with outside life, hopefully I have trained them well enough to succeed and if something goes wrong hopefully they handle it with some type of grace as well as getting through the red and white flags! Geoffery is going to pop around the prelim this weekend as well. He has been going very well and will be doing the CIC 1* at Plantation. Tate will be competeing at the CIC*** at plantation. He is on good form and we are headed to dressage 101 with Betsy Stiener on Wend. . thats it for now.

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Well a mixed week... spending the week at HITS was very interesting. I have always found the best way to learn something is to submerge yourself completely and then take away what you like and leave what you don't. There are always some nerves when trying a new venture and I certainly felt a bit out of place not knowing really the schedule and not seeing to many familiar faces. But I certainly walked away feeling confident in the ring and my horses did as well. Tate won one of his level 4 classes ( Intermediate level) and placed 5th in the level 5's ( 4' ft advanced), He also finished 3rd on Friday in his second level 4 class. Geoffrey was very good in the Grand Prix ring but when he got in smaller arena on Friday he was a little bit more difficult to keep settled. The key things I took away from the event was how crucial it is to keep putting yourself in these pressure situations, I jumped 9 showjumping rounds in 3 days which would take me nearly a whole season with two horses in pure eventing. I also learned my warm up is key and I needed a plan. My horses came out different everyday as did I so I created a few different warm up plans. If I felt my game wasn't quite right I created a plan for that, if the horses were tired I made a plan for that, If they felt board or irritated made a plan for that .. this really helped me get better prepared for Sunday mornings when the horses don't feel quite like they "always" do.
The very sad part of the weekend was that Phil Linde passed away. This is Karen O'Connor's dad. I can not recall how many Thanksgivings, Christmas's and everything in between I have spent with Joanne, Phil and the O'Connor. I am very lucky to have been so close with this family and consider them part of my family. I attended a beautiful service on Saturday followed by a warm friendly and appreciated reception at Karen and Davids home in the Plains. I am never less than impressed by the how all us get so wrapped up in our own life's but when something like this happens everyone drops what there doing and comes together if only for one day to celebrate, mourn and remember those who are closest to us. Phil we will all miss you dearly and loved sharing in your warmth, hospitality and humour.

No richland

Well tate got a little cough so 12 hours on a trailer in this heat not really a good idea. Instead I have brought Geoffrey and tate down to hits the jumper show in culpeper Va. I did 4 rounds today two on each. Tate was a super star and actually won the level 4s with the fastest jump off time he was also 5 th in the level 5s. Geoffrey was actually really good and jumped the best he has but had an unfortunate rail in both rounds. We will jump a few more rounds toMmorrow and Friday. In other exciting news the high proformance board approved tate and I for a training grant!! Which is so exciting I didn't think that was an option until late fall so I'm pumped. So dressage lessons and show jump lessons are coming my way!! Ill keep posting through the week. Xx

A winner at waradoca!

Sir bally Patrick Ricardo won his novice division on a 23. 0 ! He was a very good boy even at the 2 water jumps in xc . Geoffrey was also good but we went slow trying to figure out a new bit. This was a bit of a school for him and I still think there I some tweaking that needs to be done on the bit front but we are almost there.

Final results!

Well a trip worth taking for sure!! Tate finished 5 in the world cup behind buck on two horses Philip on one and Kyle Carter on his Olympic mount so tate stayed in good company! He tried so hard the show jumping was huge and took a toll on many. Tate had 1 down but turned himself inside out trying to be careful. Geoffrey was a handful all weekend but managed to finish 2 in the preliminary begind Mara dean Al the result is very positive but I still feel we have a bit to go to capitilize on all Geoffreys bravery and scope. Juli and I are off to have a well deserved beer and are heading back to the states early tommorror morning.

Change Change Change!!

Well a lot has happened since my last blog! First and foremost being the big move from Middleburg,VA to Gladstone,NJ. Juli, the horses and I are now based out of the most amazing farm in New Jersey. The Farm is perfect! It has an amazing Indoor and lighted outdoor and access to endless ride out. But most of all it just has a great feeling .. The horses love their quaint bank barn and when they are happy it makes juli and my job much easier!!
I took the boys to Stuart horse trials for my big debut back after breaking my arm and had a great finish on tate with a win in the OI and Geoffrey took huge leaps forward in his rideablity and finished 7th in the OP. We are headed out to Wits End in Canada to compete at the World Cup Qualifier this week, Geoffrey will tag along and do the OP and Bally will stay back and go to Millbrook with Doug( I couldn't justify taking him all the way to Canada for a novice).
Juli has had Nigel, Racer and Eddie for the last month or so while my arm mended. They have arrived down to NJ in great form and I must say I am very excited about Racer a 4 year old owned by Barb Ferneyhough ! Juli has done a fantastic job with both Eddie and Racer(both owned by barb) I will take over the ride on Racer and Juli will get to campaign Eddie. Nigel is looking very well and is starting to leg up for the fall, hopefully he will get going in Sept.
